THE COURSE
What is it?
Gaelic Cultural Studies 11 is a high school course that will provide opportunities for you to learn more
about the vibrant culture of the Gaels who came to Nova Scotia during the late seventeen and early

exciting cross-over possibilities (e.g., weaving story telling through song, dramatizing historical events,
combining visual art and writing).
What are the modules?
History and Identity
This module will explore the early history of the Gaels and their migration from Scotland while examining
such issues as settlement, social values, language and tradition, geographic considerations, genealogy and
challenges. If you are of Gaelic descent, this course will give you a chance to learn about the tragedies and
joys in the lives of your ancestors! If you are not of Gaelic descent, the stories present a pretty fascinating
picture of an immigrant people.
Oral and Written tradition/Expression
This module will identify and compare a range of forms of songs/stories/conversation from a variety of
sources, introduce Gaelic bards, singers and storytellers, explore of their roles and influences, and offer
opportunities to research and collect traditional lore, story, and song.
Gaelic Arts
This module will explore the rich legacy of traditional and present day Gaelic arts. It will involve research,
design, and production in visual art, dance, music and drama with reflection upon the significant influence
of the Gaelic culture on our present arts scene. It will allow you to find a voice for your interest and/or
talents in visual arts, dance, song and drama.
Project
This module will provide unique opportunities to work alone or in groups to extend, apply, or explore in
