The Gaels of Nova Scotia are a people whose culture is grounded in the tradition of Gaelic Scotland and shaped by the experiences of life in Canada. The rich and evolving traditions of the Gaels are a vital part of our cultural mosaic.
Gaelic Cultural Studies 11 evolves from the recognition of the need in Nova Scotia schools to offer curriculum that is reflective and representative of the experiences, perspectives and contributions of the various cultures within the province.
This course will recognize and celebrate the language, history, tradition, and arts of the Nova Scotia Gaels, and explore the continuing influence of the Gaelic culture on life in local, national and global contexts. In students of Gaelic ancestry, it will foster positive self image and an understanding of identity and roots. Learning experiences in this course will enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of and respect for the unique nature of the Gaelic culture. Gaelic Cultural Studies 11 will also provide opportunities for students to experience the diversity of expression of the many aspects of Gaelic culture and to recognize the values inherent in Gaelic community life.
